Karen Flynn (She/Her) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker specializing in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. Karen works with clients both in-person at the Fayetteville, N.C. office, and virtually. She has had experience working in community mental health as a school based counselor and joined Mindful Collaboration in 2021. Since joining the practice, She has completed the Foundational Level training for DBT and has moved on to work on her Intensive Level Certification. She is the group leader for the practice DBT consultation group and participates in weekly consultation with practice clinicians.

Karen firmly believes the skills taught in DBT are beneficial to various populations as they provide an important foundation for individuals to learn to navigate life more effectively. In addition to DBT, Karen incorporates Polyvagal Theory into her work and is a Certified Safe and Sound Protocol provider and hopes to pursue her Somatic Experiencing Practitioner Certification in the future.

When working with clients, Karen has a passion for helping individuals who present with Borderline Personality Disorder and self-harm tendencies. Additionally, Karen’s experience as a first-generation immigrant motivates her to work with other immigrants to help them navigate the complex and unique experience that is immigration.

Education

Karen holds two bachelor’s degrees and graduated with her Masters of Social Work from Our Lady of the Lake University with a concentration in Hispanic Children and Families in 2017. She is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Social Work at the University of South Carolina, College of Social Work. During her doctoral studies she has had the opportunity to work on multiple interdisciplinary teams on research related to undocumented migration, school-social worker roles with undocumented students, the nexus of climate change and migration, and her personal work on Venezuelan high-skilled migration to Argentina. She has been a presenter at the 2020, 2021, and 2023 South Eastern Immigration Studies Association Conference, and the American Anthropological Association Conference in 2022.
